Living in a Fool's Paradise?
The mail was one of the most frantic I had ever received from Calm Friend. I could 'see' her excitement in the mail, there was liberal use of capital letters and emoticons. And anyone will tell you that all-caps in email etiquette mean the other person is screaming. One's already upset stomach – too much caffeine – did a turn on reading her rather happy mail. She was in LOVE, or so it announced. Between commas and '…' signs, the words said that she had met SOMEONE. And this someone was better than the other someones because he was smarter than her, wittier than her, physically the way she wanted him to be and a whole lot of Dream Come True. AND, he felt the same about her. Knowing Usually Calm Friend to be a really warm person, one was really glad that she would be happy. YET, it was not happy-to-be because there was separation for a Long Period involved. Usually Calm Friend was worried if she could last out that period, remain celibate, not looking at anyone and why in general, did such things happen to her? One asked if either of them had discussed anything openly and if he had asked her to wait for him and if there had been promises made… "I didn't think of it THAT way. That's REALITY. No one said anything explicitly. And so what if I have just met him? But maybe I am being a fool? Will I be able to wait?"Meanwhile, there was a separate story unfolding over sms…Childhood Pal had announced on our chance meeting that he was severely in love with girl. As we sat sipping some sweet coffee on nicely crushed ice, one noticed he kept checking his phone. One asked if he were expecting a call. "No, it could be the girl I used to like." One asked why was he checking the phone for a girl he used to like. "No, I still like her, I am hoping she would call," he said. One pointed out that there was no way of knowing she would call… "It's okay, I am used to waiting like this. This is the longest she has not called," he said. Getting thoroughly confused one asked if they were dating each other. "No, I want to, she does not," he said. One pointed that there seemed no reason for her to call him. "No, we are friends, we talk as friends," he replied. Three days later, Childhood Pal SMS-ed, "Do you think I am a fool?"
